Abstract

1,088,302. Rotary-piston I. C. engines. KARL SCHMIDT G. m.b.H. Feb. 22, 1966 [March 27, 1965], No.7826/66. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I. C. engine of the trochoidal n and n + 1 lobe type, a light metal piston 1, Fig. 1a, eg, of aluminium alloy, includes in its bore a ferrous bearing adaptor 3 connected to the piston by interengaging teeth 2 with the tangent of the angle α Fig. 1b between a tooth flank and the corresponding radius of the piston equal to where L is the width of the tooth measured on the pitch circle and D the p. c. d. The angle a is chosen so that when the light metal piston and ferrous adaptor expand differentially at high temperature, the tooth flanks slide relatively to one another in their planes of contact without imposing any undue stresses on the parts. At the same time, advantage can be taken of the smaller bearing clearances which occur with ferrous bearing bushes. The adaptor, preferably of steel, may be made integral with or separate from the internally-toothed gear ring which is usually fixed to the pistons of engines of the n and n + 1 lobe type to give with the pinion fixed to the engine casing planetary motion of the piston.
