Abstract

[Also in Division G3] To maintain the total quantity of material constant in a grinding mill having coarse and fine grinding chambers and return of coarse material from the fine to the coarse chamber, the quantity of fresh material fed to the mill is automatically controlled in dependence on the noise from both chambers of the mill and the rate of coarse return. As shown, ground material from a mill 1 is transported by a conveyor 6 through a sieve 8 to a main outlet 10. Grit separated by the sieve is returned to the mill by a weighing conveyor 12. The rate of supply of fresh material to the mill by a conveyor 19 is determined by the speed of a motor 18 which is controlled at 17 by a signal from a microphone 14, mainly responsive to noise in the coarse section of the mill, to maintain noise level constant. The noise level datum is automatically adjusted by a signal from weighing conveyor 12, responsive to the rate of flow of grit, to compensate for changes in the proportion of grit which are not adequately accounted for by mill noise. The fineness of the grit separated by sieve 8 is automatically adjusted by means 22 in dependence on the load on a motor 5 driving conveyor 6.
