A method of converting a gas distribution system from town gas to natural gas comprises, at a point between converted and unconverted sectors of the system, adding propane and/or butane to town gas from the unconverted sector to produce an auxiliary gas similar in calorific value, density and Wobbe number to natural gas and feeding this gas mixture into the converted sector of the distribution system. The mixing being performed by a mobile mixing machine. Additional corrections to the calorific value, density and Wobbe number of the auxiliary gas may be made by adding air to the mixture. The mobile mixing machine comprises a mobile carriage 1 on which is mounted two pressure storage vessels 2 and 3, for liquefied propane or butane, connected through valves 4, 5, 6 and 7 to a vaporizer 8, having additional means of heating, if required, the propane gas then flows through a valve 11, a pipe 12 and a regulating valve 13 to a mixer and compressor 14 driven by a motor, not shown. The town gas from an unconverted section 17 of a pipeline 15 is supplied through a pipe 19, a gate valve 20 and a flexible pipe 21 to the mixer and compressor 14 in which it is mixed with the propane gas to form the required auxiliary gas which is fed through a flexible pipe 22, a gate valve 23 and a pipe 24 to the converted section 18 of the pipeline 15. The regulating valve 13 is controlled by a measuring and control device 26 sampling the auxiliary gas at the outlet of the mixer 14 through a pipe 25. A gate valve 16 separates the converted and the unconverted sections 17 and 18 of the pipeline 15.
