Abstract

Polyurethanes are made by reacting (a) polynitro, polynitroso, nitro-azo or nitro-azoxy compounds with polyols and CO, or (b) hydroxynitro compounds with CO, in presence of a mixture of one or more multivalent metals with one or more halides of multivalent metals other than the first-mentioned metal or metals.ALSO:Urethanes are made by reacting an organic hydroxyl compound with CO and a compound containing a non-cyclic O = N-C or N = N-C group, in presence of a mixture of one or more multivalent metals with one or more halides of multivalent metals other than the first-mentioned metal or metals. The O = N-C or N = N-C compounds may be nitro, nitroso, azo or azoxy compounds. Examples describe the preparation of PhNHCO2Me from PhNO2, CO and MeOH in presence of (1) Pd/Al2O3 + FeCl3, (2) Pd/C + FeCl3 or (3) Fe + RhCl3.ALSO:Exemplified catalysts for making urethanes from nitro, nitroso, azo or azoxy compounds are (1) Pd/Al2O3 + FeCl3, (2) Pd/C + FeCl3 (3) Fe + RhCl3.
