Abstract

Filing machines and apparatus, reciprocating.-The file is reciprocated horizontally with its cutting face downwards against an intermittently-rotated test-bar, the filings from which are collected, and a diagram is drawn of the stroke of the file plotted against the force required to propel it. A hand or power driven shaft h, Fig. 1, carries an adjustable crank-pin which drives a cross-head 4 upon which is mounted a spring- pressed socket 6, Fig. 5, in which the tang of the file is fixed. The deflection of the spring 30 is a measure of the propelling force and is transmitted through a rod 38 to the shaft 32 of a pencil-carrying arm 34 which records upon a board 36; the pencil thus partakes of a movement combined of the stroke of the file and the propelling force. A counter 44 indicates the number of the strokes of the file. To calibrate the spring, the socket 6 is moved to the vertical position shown in Fig. 3, and a stud 41 is inserted; a weighted saddle 42 bears against the stud and the deflections of the spring for known weights are recorded upon a lower board 40. The recording-apparatus can be dismantled by driving a wedge 45 into the spring socket, thus causing a cam-slotted arm 49 to lift the pencil off the paper.
