A mining machine is equipped with electric motors which are energized from a polyphase source and are adapted to drive a haulage winch and cutting tool respectively. The motors may be of the same or different types, either A.C. or D.C. A D.C. motor is supplied through a silicon controlled rectifier, whilst an A.C. motor is supplied directly or through a rectifier and inverter employing silicon controlled elements. The inverter is adapted for variable frequency and voltage output.
