Abstract
Glass fibre reinforced moulding compositions comprise (A) 0.1-30% of glass fibres sized with water or with vinyl silane and (B) 99.9-70% of an elastic-thermoplastic copolymer mixture comprising (a) 10-50% of an elastic copolymer of a conjugated diolefine, e.g. butadiene and styrene, acrylonitrile and/or an alkyl substituted derivative of styrene and/or acrylonitrile, e.g. a -methylstyrene or methacrylonitrile, and (b) 90-50% of a thermoplastic copolymer of styrene or a nuclear or side-chain alkylated styrene, e.g. a -methyl-styrene, with acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. Copolymer (B) may be prepared by mixing a latex obtained by the emulsion polymerization of butadiene, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid and divinylbenzene with a latex of a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile, adding an anti-oxidant, e.g. 2,21-methylene - bis - 4 - methyl - 6 - cyclohexyl phenol, and coagulating the mixture with calcium chloride solution. The composition may be prepared by homogenizing the copolymer (B) with the water-sized glass fibres, e.g. of diameter 1-50 microns and length 0.05-6 mm., adding calcium or zinc stearate, the above antioxidant and titanium dioxide, compacting the powder into strips and then granulating. The composition may be formed into shaped articles.
