Abstract

In the manufacture of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic di- or poly-isocyanates by reaction of the corresponding amines or their hydrochlorides with phosgene in the presence of an inert solvent, the reaction is effected at 120-128 DEG C. and the proportion of solvent, by weight, to amine is 18-30 : 1. Specified solvents are chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, benzene, toluene, xylene, n-octane and anisole. Examples are given of the manufacture of m-xylylene diisocyanate, p-1,8-menthane diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, 4,6-dimethyl-1,3 xylylene diisocyanate, pentamethylene diisocyanate, nonamethylene diisocyanate and decamethylene diisocyanate.
