Abstract
Weatherproof multilayer chipboard is formed by hot-pressing wood chips or lignified vegetable fibres, the middle-layer binder being ureaformaldehyde resins and the surface-layer binder being phenol-formaldehyde or resorcinol-formaldehyde or mixtures thereof. The phenol may be carbolic acid, cresol or xylenol. Vegetable fibres may be flax, straw or bagasse. The wood chips may be pinewood, 0.4-0.5 mm. by 3-5 mm. by 20-35 mm. for the middle layer, and 0.2 mm. by 2 mm. by 8-15 mm. for the surface layer. The middle layer may be sawmill waste. The urea-formaldehyde glue may contain paraffin emulsion and hardener, e.g. NH4Cl, hexamethylenetetramine, and urea. The phenol-formaldehyde binder may contain paraffin emulsion. The chipboard may be compressed to 20 mm. thickness in an hydraulic hotplate press with pressure 15 kp./cm.2 for 7-8 minutes at 150-160 DEG C.
