Abstract

Solutions of therapeutically active water-soluble substances are prepared by extraction of bone marrow, obtained from cattle suffering from bovine cysticercosis, with water or hydroxylic organic solvents. Such solvents may be ethanol, iso-propanol, propylene glycol or glycerol, and the bone marrow may be extracted by grinding it with the solvent in the presence of an inert abrasive material such as sand. Prior to extraction, the bone marrow is preferably defatted with a fat solvent and treated with a water-miscible ketone, e.g. acetone, and the final extract of the process is filtered, sterilised by filtration and sealed into vials. The active substances may be employed in this form, or preferably after dilution with saline and addition of glycerol, cresol and buffering agents, as compositions for injection, and are said to have anti-tumour activity. The substance comprises a mixture of amino acids, including one or more of leucine, iso-leucine, methionine, cystine, threonine, lysine, valine, and L-phenyl-alanine; vitamins, particularly of the B complex; serum proteins such as albumins, globulins and properdin; indole derivatives, e.g. tryptophan; enzymes, particularly proteinases; amino-aromatic compounds and purine bases; a lipopolysaccharide and iron and molybdenum derivatives. The substance exhibits anti-folic acid activity.
