Abstract
Rigid polyvinyl chloride is stabilized against light by incorporating therein (a) 0.1 to 5 weight per cent, based on the polymer, of an amide RCONHYNHCOR, where Y is C1- 18 alkylidene or alkylene and R is C1- 18 alkyl, alkenyl or N-substituted amino alkyl in which the substituents are C1- 6 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or cyanoalkyl, and (b) 0.1 to 3 weight per cent of an ultra-violet light absorber selected from substituted 2-hydroxybenzophenones, 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) - benzotriazoles, phenolic esters, triazines, benzo thiazoles, benzylidene malonic esters and arylaminoethylenes. Many suitable amides and ultra-violet light absorbers are listed and examples describe the stabilization of rigid polyvinyl chloride containing a conventional heat stabilizer with light stabilizers comprising N,N1-methylene bis-acrylamide, N-stearamidomethylene acrylamide or N,N1-ethylene bis-stearamide, and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone or diethyl p-methoxybenzylidene malonate.
