Abstract

1,086,023. Enclosing Stiffener in bags. EQUITABLE PAPER BAG CO. Inc. Aug. 31, 1964, No. 35518/64. Heading B5D. A band of adhesive secures a cardboard reinforcement 24 (Fig. 7) within a top compartment formed in a plastics bag by folding a web about the cardboard reinforcement and sealing it at 41. The bags are subsequently sealed and severed along lines 188. A line of weakness may be provided in the seal 41, and after filling and sealing the flap 21 may be cut off. In the apparatus described (Fig. 1) two sets of bags are made simultaneously from separate webs 15 and 15<SP>1</SP>. Each web may be provided with a coloured or opaque portion 198 which covers both sides of the reinforcing strip. The reinforcing strip 24, which may be cardboard, is fed into the longitudinal fold formed in the web 15 by rollers 32, 33. A guide 36 (see Fig. 1a) may be provided to hold the reinforcing strip against the fold in the web. Perforating wheels 40 provide a line of weakness in the bag material adjacent the edge of the reinforcing strip. Adhesive is applied to one or both sides of the strip 24 by nozzles 46, 49 supplied from a tank 52. The adhesive may be applied in a single line of sufficient thickness to spread out over the whole of the reinforcing strip when the surface of the bag is pressed against it. Electrically heated sealers 54 then secure the two bag walls together around the line of perforations 41 and feed rollers 60 flatten the web against the adhesive which has been pro. vided on the reinforcing strip. Alternatively rollers may be provided to flatten the web against the adhesive before it passes the sealers 54. The web then passes to a slack accumulator 58 so that the continuous movement of the web may be changed to an intermittent movement. The web is then moved intermittently by rollers 90 through a device 108 where holes 200 are punched in the reinforcing strip. A heated element 132 seals and severs across the non-reinforced portion of the bag and simultaneously a blade 146 cuts through the reinforced portion. A small portion of the bag in the region 41 may be left unsevered to assist in the delivery of the bag through the machine. After the bags have been fed on to a conveyer 164 they are pulled apart by a device 168.
