Abstract

A fluid-pressure actuator comprises a differential piston 1 having an output rod 6, the chamber 35 on the smaller area side being fed with fluid from an inlet 34 and the chamber 44 on the larger area side being connected to the chamber 35 or exhaust under the control of valve 28 on a rod 38. The rod is moved by a pressure signal fed to the space 43 between interconnected diaphragms 14, 15 of different effective areas such that the signal acts against a lever 18, pivoted at 19 and loaded by a spring 23. The opposite end of the spring is mounted through a rod 49 on a U-shaped carrier 51 pivoted at 52 and having a limb 64 which is engaged by pins 61, 62, 63 on a rotatable plate 59, the pins effectively forming a cam surface. The plate 59 is connected by a rod 66 and a universal joint 68 to an assembly comprising the lever pivot 19 and diaphragm assembly which is fixed to the piston 1 through a rod 10. In operation, a change in the signal pressure causes actuation of the valve 28 to move the piston 1. The movement of the piston carries with it the pivot 19 of lever 18 and also the joint 68 and thus rotates plate 59, which, through the pins 61, 62, 63, rotates the U-shaped carrier 51. The two ends of the spring 23 are thus adjusted until the force on the lever 18 again balances the new signal pressure and the arrangement of the pins is such that the piston 1 moves a distance proportional to the square root of the change in the signal pressure. The signal pressure may be provided in response to a pressure differential across an orifice in a flow path and since this pressure differential is proportional to the square of the flow, the output is proportional to the flow. The output member 6 may control the displacement of a pump 7 feeding additive to the flow path. It is also stated that the member 6 may control a valve or work-table.
