Abstract

An oxymethylene polymer is produced from formaldehyde with intermediate formation of trioxane and its polymerization or copolymerization with another monomer by polymerizing the formaldehyde in an aqueous acid medium to trioxane, extracting the trioxane from the aqueous mixture containing unreacted formaldehyde by means of a water-immiscible organic solvent, polymerizing the trioxane dissolved in this solvent and recovering the polymer from the organic solvent which is recycled together with unreacted trioxane contained therein to an appropriate part of the system. The trioxane produced in the aqueous acid medium may be vaporized therefrom together with water and unreacted formaldehyde, the vapours fractionally condensed to give an aqueous solution of formaldehyde which is returned to the aqueous acid medium and a vaporous mixture of trioxane, water and formaldehyde which is subjected to treatment with the organic solvent to form a liquid trioxane-containing extract for polymerization. The organic solvent may be benzene, while sulphuric acid may be the formaldehyde trimerization catalyst and form trifluoride or its complexes. The polymerization catalyst or specified comonomers are ethylene oxide and 1,3-dioxolane. The polymerization catalyst may be neutralized, e.g. with n-butylamine.
