Abstract

Polyurethanes may be prepared by one-shot or quasi-prepolymer processes by reacting polyisocyanates with polyols of the general formula <FORM:1085857/C3/1> wherein each R is hydrogen, halo nitro, C1-C12 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl hydroxyalkyl or haloalkyl, R1 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, chloromethyl, phenyl, or mixtures thereof, each of x, y and z is at least one and the sum of x+y+z is three to eight, using the above polyols either as the sole polyol component or in combination with up to 70% of a conventional polyol. Blowing agents, foam stabilizers and fire retardants may optionally be employed.ALSO:Nitrogen - containing polyols or mixtures thereof, which may have the general formula <FORM:1085857/C2/1> where each R is hydrogen, halo, nitro, C1- 12 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, haloalkyl or hydroxyalkyl, R1 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, chloromethyl, phenyl or mixtures thereof, each of x, y and z is at least 1 and the sum of x+y+z is 3 to 8, are prepared by reacting ammonia, formaldehyde and the appropriately substituted phenol, and reacting the resulting substituted aminomethylphenol with an alkylene oxide at a temperature within the range of 30 DEG to 200 DEG C. Specified alkylene oxides are ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, styrene oxide, epichlorhydrin, glycidol, and mixtures thereof, and the alkoxylation is preferably effected in two stages.
