Abstract

Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a polyol having a hydroxyl number of 350-900 and containing 1-15 wt. per cent tertiary nitrogen, the polyol containing 1-3 N-disubstituted aminomethyl groups attached to an aromatic nucleus and being derived from the Mannich condensation product of a phenol, formaldehyde and an alkanolamine, by reacting with propylene oxide, 1,2-butylene oxide, styrene oxide, glycidol or mixtures thereof. The said polyisocyanate is preferably a quasi-prepolymer containing 20-40% free isocyanate groups prepared from an organic polyisocyanate and a conventional polyol of hydroxyl number 350-900 and in the reaction with the tertiary N-containing polyol a foam stabilizer and a blowing agent are preferably present and additionally a fire retarder. Examples describe the preparation of rigid polyurethane foams.ALSO:The invention comprises polyols having a hydroxyl number of 350-900 and containing 1-15 wt. per cent tertiary nitrogen, which may be prepared by reacting together at 30-200 DEG C. (1) propylene oxide, 1,2-butylene oxide, styrene oxide, glycidol or mixtures thereof, with (2) the Mannich condensation product of a phenol, formaldehyde and an alkanolamine of one of the formulae <FORM:1002272/C2/1> wherein R is H or C1- 4-alkyl, R1 is H, C1- 4-alkyl or-(CHR)n-OH and n is 2-5. The polyols contain 1-3 N - disubstituted aminomethyl groups attached to the phenolic nucleus. In examples, propylene oxide was reacted with the Mannich condensate of phenol or p-chlorophenol, formaldehyde and diethanolamine.
