Abstract

[Also in Division F3] A transport or like system comprises an effectively sealed tunnel or pipe 1, the Figure not shown, in which are disposed guides (not shown), and pumps (6) for establishing and maintaining conditions of low ambient pressure in the tunnel so that a vehicle (9) may be propelled along the guides with a substantial reduction of air resistance. The system may be used above, on, or below ground level, or as a submarine system, or as a portable system, or as a space simulator to produce high accelerations and weightlessness, or to accelerate and rotate free flying or powered missiles, or to carry goods or passengers. An air lock (3) provided at each end of the tunnel connects the tunnel with loading/unloading or repair/servicing areas 2, and comprises doors (4), (5) and a branch (7) controlled by a valve (8) interlocked with the door (5) to enable the lock (3) to be evacuated by a pump (6) when the door (5) is closed. The vehicle is driven by a linear electric induction motor (not shown) having its armature either on the vehicle, or on guide rails (not shown) fitted to the floor and walls in the tunnel (1), air locks (3), and areas (2). The vehicle (9) is of stressed skin construction and is contoured to reduce air resistance due to residual air, and is supported from the guide rails by roller bearings (not shown) or skids (not shown) cooled by cooled compressed air passed through the rail to outlets in the rail or piped to nozzles tear the rail. The vehicle has a built-in air or oxygen supply system. Braking may be effected electrically using the induction motor. Intermediate stations are provided in the tunnel (1) and include air locks, and are bypassed by branch tunnels.
