Abstract

1,085,507. Grips for holding material in testing machines. INSTRON CORPORATION. Feb. 17, 1966 [May 26, 1965], No. 7114/66. Heading G1S. [Also in Division E2] A grip for holding material in a testing machine has two parallely mounted relatively rotatable capstans 20, 48, cylindrical surfaces 22, 54 for receiving the ends of the material specimen, and a locking member to prevent relative rotation of the two capstans 20, 48. The inner capstan comprises a fixed portion 50 and a movable portion 52, the portion 50 being fixed to external flanges 36, 38 by a cam-shaft 55 supporting rotatable cams 60, 62 engageable with spring-biased bolts 66, 68 extending into the laterally movable capstan portion 52. Relative rotation of the inner and outer capstans is accomplished by relative movement of support flanges 36, 38 under the control of a spring-loaded stepped detent pin 90. In operation, the movable capstan portion 52 is moved away from the portion 50, by rotation of cams 60, 62 to raise the bolts 66, 68 permitting insertion of the material, subsequent release of the cams 60, 62 causing the capstan portions to move together to grip the material. Detent pin 90 is then unlocked and knob 116 rotated to move flanges 36, 38 and inner capstan 48 relative to bore 32 of the outer capstan 20, thus winding the material around surface 54 of the inner capstan 48; knob 116 being released to return pin 70 to its locked position.
