Abstract

Cotton fibres are brightened by treating them with an aqueous solution which contains (1) an optical brightener having the formula <FORM:1085441/D1-D2/1> in which R1 and R11 are alkyl groups having not more than 5 carbon atoms, R1 and R2 are unsubstituted or non-ionogenically substituted, straight chain alkyl groups having not more than 5 carbon atoms and X is a colourless anion, and (2) a water-soluble organic quaternary ammonium salt containing at least one hydrophobic radical or a water-soluble 1,2-disubstituted imidazoline salt containing at least one hydrophobic radical. When R1 and R2 are non-ionogenically substituted alkyl groups these may be b -cyanoethyl or b -chloroethyl groups. X may be Cl-, Br-, HSO3- or arylSO3-, e.g. p-toluene-, p-chlorobenzene- or benzene-sulphonic acid. The water soluble organic quaternary ammonium salt containing at least one hydrophobic radical may be a bis-stearyl-bis-methyl ammonium salt or a compound having the formula, <FORM:1085441/D1-D2/2> and the 1, 2-disubstituted imidazoline salt containing at least one hydrophobic radical may be a water soluble salt of a 1-alkyl-2-oleyl-imidazoline or 1-stearoyl-aminoethyl-2-heptadecyl-imidazoline acetate. When treatment is effected in the liquor cotton fibres are brightened and softened if a quarternary ammonium salt is used and polyamide, polyester and polyacrylonitrile fibres if present are rendered antistatic if a 1,2-disubstituted imidazoline salt is used. The treated materials may have been crease-proofed by treating them with dimethylol N.N\sv-ethyleneurea and magnesium chloride.
