Abstract
Film- or fibre-forming polyesters are made by polycondensing a glycol ester of a dicarboxylic acid or low molecular weight polymer thereof in the form of liquid droplets of diameter 0.5 to 1000 microns, the droplets being exposed to a relative motion in a chemically inert gaseous fluid. The droplets may be allowed to fall freely through the gaseous fluid (e.g. in a vertical tower) or the gaseous fluid may be in the form of an upwardly moving stream. The partial pressure of glycol in the gaseous fluid is kept at a low value, e.g. by contacting the gaseous fluid with a condensing surface or by purging a proportion of the gaseous fluid and replacing it by fresh gaseous fluid. Specified glycol esters are the ethylene glycol ester of terephthalic or 1:2-diphenoxyethane-4:41-dicarboxylic acids (alone or in admixture with adipic or isophthalic acid). An example describes the preparation of polyethylene terephthalate.
