Abstract
Methyl methacrylate is prepared by reacting acetone cyanhydrin with anhydrous sulphuric acid or oleum, hydrolysing and esterifying the resultant mixture by adding water and methanol, distilling and condensing the mixture, adjusting the pH of the two phase condensate to 6-11 by addition of an alkaline solution, separating the two phases and purifying the ester phase. It is preferred to adjust the pH of the condensed phase to 8.5-9.5. The hydrophilic phase remaining after the separation of the ester phase may be recycled to the water/methanol mixture used in the hydrolysis step. The ester phase may be purified by extraction with water to remove methanol, followed by distillation. It is preferred to operate in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone. The process is illustrated by reference to a diagrammatic flow sheet (not shown).
