Abstract

Pure chlorosulphonic acid is produced by reacting together sulphur trioxide and hydrogen chloride in liquid chlorosulphonic acid at its boiling point. The liquid chlorosulphonic acid at its boiling point is supported in a column 1 by packing 5 above a perforated plate 6. The <PICT:1084984/C1/1> hydrogen chloride is introduced through an inlet 4 and the sulphur trioxide through an inlet 3. The gases react together in the packing 5 and the chlorosulphonic acid is removed immediately it is formed and cooled in a cooler 10 to a temperature below 50 DEG C. As the chlorosulphonic acid from the packing passes to the bottom 8 of the column any unreacted sulphur trioxide remaining is treated with further gaseous hydrogen chloride. Any evaporated chlorosulphonic acid is condensed by the reflux condenser 2 and returned to the packing whilst excess hydrogen chloride is led off at 7.
