Abstract
Spinning solutions are prepared from waste materials, arising during the production of fibres of acrylonitrile homo- or co-polymers from spinning solutions whose solvent is an aqueous solution of a suitable inorganic salt, e.g. sodium thiocyanate, by a process wherein the waste material comprising coagulates of the original spinning solution, or waste fibres, still containing 0.1 to 15% by weight of said salt is comminuted or cut into short chips, dried at 40-130 DEG C., added to a cooled organic solvent suitable for preparing spinning solutions from said polymers, allowed to swell for 0.5 to 20.0 hours, and the swollen material then heated in said organic solvent to 50-130 DEG C. until the waste material is completely dissolved. In the drying step, heating is preferably continued until the waste material has a water content not exceeding 5% by weight. Preferably, the dried material is added to the organic solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, while the latter is being agitated and is at a temperature of 5-20 DEG C., agitation then being continued until dissolution of the waste material has been achieved. The solution obtained may then be filtered and deaerated before being spun into fibres in a bath of the said organic solvent diluted with water.
