A friction damper for use with at least a pair of conductors of an electrical overhead transmission line comprise a link 10 inter-connecting a pair of clamps 11 to grip each of the conductors. The link 10 consists of two telescopic parts 14, 15, the part 14 being provided with four rubber-backed bearings 26 which frictionally engage the part 15. A head 23 and rubber disc 24 of the part 15 works between two stops, that is the lug 25 of the clamp 11 and an annular rubber disc 27. The link 10 is connected to the clamps through a flexible hinge joint 17 incorporating a cylindrical or part spherical rubber bush as disclosed in Specification 788, 076 for example. Spring means e.g. a coiled tension-compression spring or a stack of rubber springs may be provided between the two parts to maintain the limit at a mean length. In an alternative construction the telescopic members comprise a U-shaped bracket between the limbs of which is mounted a plate-like arm. Friction pads may be attached to the limbs or to the arm, the limbs being as springs to pre-load the pads, or each pad may have a backing of a rubber pad Fig. 2 (not shown). These dampers may be formed into a square array with a clamp at each corner of the array Fig. 3 (not shown). The clamp is connected to the link by rubber blocks. The links on two parallel sides of the square may have the damper omitted. In a further embodiment the two parts pivot about a hinge which is provided with a friction damper Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). More than two parts may be hinged together in this construction.
