1,084,054. Pigmented polymer dispersions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 27, 1964 [March 15, 1963], No. 10354/63. Heading C3G. Pigmented coating compositions based on substantially non-flocculated film-forming polymer particles stably dispersed in an organic liquid are made in which (a) the polymer dispersion is one that at 60% solids by volume has a viscosity of less than 10 poises at 20‹ C., (b) the organic liquid has a boiling point above 100‹ C. and at least 10% by volume thereof has a boiling point not higher than 300‹ C., and (c) the proportion of liquid relative to the disperse phase content of the composition is between 0À9: 1À0 and 1À6:1À0 by volume. The dispersions are of the type described in Specification 941,305, i.e. dispersions stabilized by a block or graft copolymer of which the major proportion of the copolymer molecules contain a polymeric chain solvated by the organic liquid and a polymeric chain which is relatively non- solvated and is compatible with the polymer of the dispersion. Preferably the pigment, prior to addition to the polymer dispersion, is dispersed in a solution of a block or graft copolymer which is then partially precipitated to stabilize the dispersion. The examples describe pigmenting with titanium dioxide and red iron oxide: (1) a dispersion in white spirit of a vinyl acetate/methyl hydrogen maleate copolymer stabilized by copolymerizing the monomers in the presence of a lauryl methacrylate/glydidyl methacrylate copolymer esterified with methacrylic acid, (2) a dispersion in white spirit of a methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate copolymer stabilized by a copolymer made by polymerizing methyl methacrylate in the presence of a methacrylated lauryl methacrylate/propylene glycol monomethacrylate copolymer, (3) a dispersion in kerosene/disextol phthalate of polymethyl methacrylate stabilized by a methyl methacrylate/degraded rubber graft copolymer and (4) a dispersion in ethylene glycol/betaethoxyethanol of a lauryl methacrylate/vinyl toluene copolymer stabilized by a graft copolymer of polylauryl methacrylate and poly- (ethylene glycol monoacrylate).
