Abstract

Plasmin and trypsin inhibitors are isolated from human or animal body fluids by a process comprising (a) treating with 0.005 to 0.015 M buffer at a pH of 5.1 to 5.3 to bring the pH of the fluids to this value; (b) applying the treated fluids to carboxymethylpolysaccharide equilibrated with 0.005 to 0.15 M buffer at a pH of 5.1 to 5.3; (c) eluting with 0.005 to 0.15 M, pH 5.1 to 5.3 buffer containing sulphated polymer anions; (d) removing these anions from the eluate; and (e) recovering from the eluate a product containing the said inhibitors. Preferably the same buffer, such as citrate or phosphate, is used throughout. The adsorbant may be carboxymethylcellulose, or a cross-linked dextran etherified with carboxymethyl groups. Sulphated polymer anions may be provided by heparin or heparinoids, or sodium polyethylene sulphonate. The purified solution of inhibitors provided by the process may be freeze-dried to give a solid product.
