The level of a mercury column in a thermometer is determined by a capacitor pick-off formed by a conducting sleeve e.g. of metal foil or a deposited layer of metal or graphite on the glass tube, and the mercury. The mercury is connected directly or through a further capacitor sleeve to a 10 Kcs transistor oscillator,and the variable impedance of the capacitor (representing the height of the column) is measured by an amplifier and rectifier meter circuit.
