Abstract

1,083,671. Gravity separation apparatus. JAMES HOWDEN & CO. Ltd. March 2, 1964 [March 4, 1963], No. 8513,63. Heading B1D. In a sedimentation tank water enters through inlet 2 and flows from side 3 to an outlet 11 at side 3a by means of a sinuous passage 4, 5, 6 and 7 defined by baffle plates 14, 15 and 16 which are angled to provide upper sloping surfaces 14a, 15a and 16a which receive thereon solid impurities, a dust-bank 13 forming in the sloping base 10. Perforated plates 12, preferably arranged at an angle of 30‹ to the horizontal, are placed in runs 5 and 7 through which the water flows in an upward direction. The restricted exit from run 4, and the venturi shaped passage between runs 5 and 6 causes variations in the velocity as well as variations in flow direction of the water and dust particles therein.
