Abstract
1,083,242. Laminates. FORMICA CORPORATION. Jan. 17, 1966 [Feb. 25, 1965], No. 2156/66. Heading B5N. A process for producing a decorative thermoset laminate comprises preparing an assembly in stacked relationship of one or more thermosetting resin-impregnated core sheets 6, and a thermosetting resin - impregnated decorative sheet 5 upon which is superimposed a release sheet 3, upon which in turn is superimposed a perforated stencil 2 having a thickness between 0À0005 inch and 0À030 inch, the release sheet 3 either being unperforated or if perforated having its perforations completely out of register with the perforations of the stencil 2, applying heat and pressure to consolidate the assembly into a unitary structure, and removing the release sheet and the perforated stencil from the consolidated structure. The result of the process is to form raised areas in the shapes of stars, geometrical designs, or messages, depending on the shape of the perforations, on the upper surface of the laminate, the raised areas being joined to the rest of the laminate upper surface via smooth curves. When the decorative sheet 5 is a solid colour it is in direct contact with the release sheet 3, but when the sheet 5 bears a printed design a transparent overlay sheet 4, as shown, is interposed. As described, the core sheets 6 are of thermosetting resin-impregnated Kraft paper, the decorative sheet 5 and the overlay sheet are impregnated with a colourless thermosetting resin, which in the case of the sheet 5 is pigmented if desired, the release sheet 3 is a non-adherable paper, e.g. parchment paper; paper coated, treated, or impregnated, with polyethylene, polypropylene or a polyfluorocarbon; paper treated with silicone oil, silicone resin, or an animoplast resin, e.g. urea or triazine resins; or paper coated with sodium alginate; or is a non-adherable metal, e.g. aluminium or copper, foil, or is aluminium foil glued to Kraft paper, and the stencil 2 is paper or metal foil. The treatment of the assembled stack is carried out in a laminating press between polished steel press-plates 1, 7.
