Abstract

[Also in Division 87] Apparatus for storing articles includes groups of installations each comprising storage units 1, Fig. 3, interconnected as an endless chain and mounted for horizontal movement in a closed path having two adjacent parallel rows of units interconnected by turning portions to which the units may be brought for loading and unloading the installations being arranged side-by-side with the rows parallel to one another and a service passage 10 running in front of corresponding turning portions. Each unit 1 may consist of a platform or a box-like frame, Fig. 1 (not shown), e.g. for carrying vertically aligned trays or shelves, the platform or frame having wheels or balls on the base thereof. The units 1 are interconnected by a driven endless chain 6 and in the passage 10 vertically and horizontally movable gripping devices may operate for conveying the units removed from the apparatus to a selected point in the passage. At each turning portion of the closed path the chain 6 co-operates with a sprocket wheel 14, Fig. 5, the units 1 having components 12 which engage in guides 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, straight guides 15, 16 are provided and each unit 1 has a stud 19 projecting therefrom for engagement with a stop 20. In a third embodiment, Fig. 7, the units 1 are interconnected by links 21 the pivots 22, 23 of which have rollers 24, 25 for engaging guides 26, 27, and a disc 30 is provided having slots 28, 29 for engaging the pivots 22, 23. In fourth and fifth embodiments, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the units 1 are interconnected by two seriesconnected links and discs are provided having three and four slots, respectively. In a sixth embodiment, Fig. 10, the units 1 are interconnected by chain lengths 45 which are engaged by teeth 51 on a component 46, the latter also having recesses 47, 48 for engaging the chain pivots 49, 50. In a seventh embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), which is similar to that described with reference to Fig. 5, each unit 1 has two components 12, one at each end thereof, for engagement in two separate guides replacing the guide 13<SP>1</SP>. In an eighth embodiment, Fig. 12, the units 1 are interconnected by links 21, the pivots 22, 23 of which have rollers 24, 25 for engaging guides 54, 55, each unit 1 having pins 56 for engagement by recesses 57 in a wheel 58. Instead of the units 1 being supported from below they may be carried by an overhead support. The units may be driven manually or mechanically and may be automatically controlled.
