1,083,014. Determining shapes. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Dec. 31, 1964 [Dec. 31, 1963], No. 53090/64. Heading G1M. A method and apparatus for identifying mechanical parts comprising applying against the part 1 to be identified the openings of tubular members 4 whose relative positions are known, introducing a fluid under pressure into said tubular members or creating an underpressure within said tubular members determining the tubular members (4b in Fig. 1) in which fluid freely flows either from the tubular members or thereinto and those which are closed (4a and c in Fig. 1) by contact with the part 1, and deducing therefrom the identity of said part. In the embodiment described the parts to be identified have annular grooves 16 whose number position vary with the said part. The tubular members are formed by channels 4 bored in a control head 2, the channels being connected to a fluid conduit 6 and each channel also being connected to a manometer 10 which gives two indications i. e. whether the outlet is blocked or open. As shown three channels are used, one 4b in the centre of the head 2, one 4a at the periphery and one 4c half-way between. Two further channels 4d, 4e Fig. 2 (not shown) may be provided for determining the shape of the part 1. In a further embodiment Fig. 7 (not shown) a series of heads are provided which are kept in contact with the parts under test by springs 36.
