Abstract

The adhesion of basic polymers and copolymers to the surface of synthetic linear polyester fibrous materials, e.g. filaments, fibres and fabrics of polyethylene terephthalate, is improved by heating the polyester material to a temperature above 100 DEG C in contact with a polymeric substance containing a plurality of carboxyl groups and then heating the treated material in contact with the basic polymer or copolymer. The polymeric substance containing a plurality of carboxyl groups may be a polymer or copolymer of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic or itaconic acid, in the case of a copolymer the component containing the carboxyl groups preferably comprising at least 10% on a molar basis of the constituents of the polymer. The carboxyl groups may be produced in the polymer by hydrolysis of ester, nitrile or amide groups. The basic polymer or copolymer may be a copolymer of butadiene, styrene and vinyl pyridine of the type used to improve the adhesion of fibrous materials to natural and synthetic rubbers and may be used in admixture with a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin.ALSO:The adhesion of basic polymers and copolymers to the surface of synthetic linear polyester shaped articles, e.g. films and fabrics of polyethylene terephthalate, is improved by heating the polyester shaped article to a temperature above 100 DEG C in contact with a polymeric substance containing a plurality of carboxyl groups and then heating the treated shaped article in contact with the basic polymer or copolymer. The polymeric substance containing a plurality of carboxyl groups may be a polymer or copolymer of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic or itaconic acid, in the case of a copolymer the component containing the carboxyl groups preferably comprising at least 10% on a molar basis of the constituents of the polymer. The carboxyl groups may be produced in the polymer by hydrolysis of ester, nitrile or amide groups. The basic polymer or copolymer may be a copolymer of butadiene, styrene and vinyl pyridine of the type used to improve the adhesion of fibrous materials to natural and synthetic rubbers and may be used in admixture with a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin.
