Abstract

A process for sulphur reduction and sweetening of hydrocarbon oils comprises admixing with a mercaptan-containing oil in the liquid phase a sulphur-reducing quantity of concentrated sulphuric acid and an organic sulphonyl halide (the additions being in any order), separating the acid reaction products from the oil, mixing with the separated oil an alkaline reagent having the characteristics of a strong base, and again separating the oil. Numerous alkyl and aryl sulphonyl chlorides are listed, the strong base may be caustic soda, alkaline solutions of lead salts, soda-lime, sodium aluminate, a quaternary ammonium hydroxide or a basic ion-exchange resin and may be used solid or in an aqueous medium.
