In a pilot burner and ignition device two highfrequency ignition electrodes (20, 21) are arranged above the pilot burner tube so that their tips are enveloped by the flame (15) and at least one of the electrodes serves as part of a flame monitoring device, an electrically conductive path being formed between that electrode and the pilot burner housing by the flame.
