Abstract
An organic active laser medium is dissolved or suspended in a liquid which is circulated through an optical cavity, a cooling system and a reservoir. The active medium absorbs radiant energy of a first frequency to become excited and then reacts chemically to form an excited reaction product which falls to a lower energy state emitting coherent radiation of a second frequency lower than the first frequency and then reacts chemically to regenerate the original medium in its non-excited state. Examples of active medium are : (1) 8-cyano-2-naphthalene in a concentrated aqueous solution of pH 4 gives a green output; (2) methyl salicylate in methyl-cyclo-hexane gives a blue output; (3) pyrene in pentane or hexane gives a blue output.
