Abstract
Steel articles such as sheet, strip, plate, wire, bar or rod are coated with a first layer of Cu, Brass, Ag or Au e.g. by vapour deposition or electroless deposition or electrolytic deposition and an outer coating of Zn is applied by vacuum vapour deposition. The Zn is evaporated at 1-30 microns at 1350 DEG F. at a deposition rate of 2.5 to 26 lbs/square ft/minute to form a coating 25 x 10-6 to 2000 x 10-6 inches thick. The intermediate coating thickness is 0.25 x 10-6 to 100 x 10-6 inches. The steel is treated in a continuous process of cleaning, electrolytic or electroless deposition, rinsing, drying and vapour deposition of Zn. Cu may be deposited electrolessly from a copper sulphate solution pH 2.0 or electrolytically from a solution of copper cyanide, sodium cyanide and sodium carbonate.
