Abstract
To strengthen glassware, the surface is first etched with an aqueous solution of one or more acid, the etched glass is then subjected to the action of high vacuum, i.e. at pressures less than 0.1 millimetres of mercury, and finally to a cation-exchange treatment whereby cations in the surface layers are replaced by cations that occupy a larger volume, The glass may also be etched in a further step after the high vacuum treatment and before the cation-exchange treatment, such etching removing a layer of about 10 microns as against removal of about 50 microns in the first etching. Etching is normally by HF alone or with H2SO4, the glass then being washed with distilled water and acetone. The high vacuum is maintained for about 1 hour when the glass is heated, for example to 300 DEG C. or for about 6 hours at room temperature. For soda/lime glass, the cation-exchange treatment is by molten KNO3 at about 430 DEG C. for 1 hour.
