Abstract

A motor vehicle suspension comprises a cylinder 1 secured to the vehicle, in which a shaft 5 is freely rotatable upon bearings 10, 11, 12 and 13. The shaft 5 is additionally supported in the vehicle by bearing members (c, d, Fig. 2) and is integral with a wheel support arm (b). A worm 2 is fixed upon the shaft 5 and is provided with a partition 4 whereby two compartments are formed in the cylinder, which is filled with oil. Toroidal gas or rubber springs 26 and 27 are located at the ends of the cylinder. Damping holes, which may include valves, may be provided in the partition 4 and the spring rate may be varied by interposing a reduction gear, or a pair of reduction gears operable from the vehicle driving position, between the wheel arm and the shaft 5. Gas springs, 26 and 27, in the various wheel units may be interconnected or may be connected to an accumulator or to means for varying the pressure to vary the spring rate controllable by the vehicle driver. The gas spring may be bigger at one end than at the other so that the resistance to motion of the wheel arm may be greater in one direction than the other.
