Abstract

1,082,041. Valves. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Jan. 18, 1965 [Jan. 22, 1964], No. 2169/65. Heading F2V. A valve controlling the connection between a vacuum line and a casting chamber to be evacuated is in the form of a removable cartridge comprising a cylinder 1 telescoped in the vacuum line. The. valve closure is in the form of a circular plate 8 that co-operates with an annular seat supporting an 0-ring 10 and is connected by a pair of cables 12 attached to a shaft 14 rotatable in the cylinder flange 2; winding spools may be disposed on the shaft 14. Rotation of the shaft 14, causes upward motion of the plate 8 to provide a small annular flow path therearound, until the plate contacts a chordal rod 17 whereupon it tilts to a partiallyopen position; when the plate engages a pair of diametrically opposed members 18 it is tilted further to the fully-open position wherein it abuts a stop rod 20. In a modification the plate is provided with a pair of pilot valves 21 to establish a gradual connection across the plate before the latter unseats. The pilot valves are actuated by the cables 12 and each consists of cylinder 23 depending from the plate 8 about an opening therein and having a seat 25 for a valve closure 26; a liner 29 in the cylinder 23 incorporates a number of V-shaped slots which are gradually uncovered as the closure 26 is lifted. When the closure 26 abuts a stop-bar 32 the plate 8 begins to open.
