Abstract

A reflex reflector comprises a monolayer of glass beads 11 of refractive index above 1.7 firmly partially embedded in at least one side of a layer of malleable and ductile metal 10 having a Knoop hardness less than the crushing stregth of the glass beads. The reflector is formed by <PICT:1081601/C1/1> <PICT:1081601/C1/2> pressing the beads into the metal under elevated temperature conditions. The beads are held in position on a second metal layer 13 by a temporary organic bonding material 12, the layer 13 being advanced towards the layer 10 to effect the pressing operation. The beaded surface produced is then washed free of the organic material 12. The layer 13 has a Knoop hardness greater than that of the layer 10 but less than the crushing strength of the glass beads so that it "grips" the beads during the pressing operation. The metal layer 10 is preferably aluminium but may be copper, lead, zinc, tin, gold, for example. Such metals as lead are made specularly reflecting by deposition thereon of a layer of aluminium. The soft metal layer 10 may be carried on an iron or steel sheet 14. Prior to the pressing operation a legend 15 of any desired shape may be coated on the reflecting face of the layer 10. The glass beads 11 will then trap the legend in position. In order to provide reflex reflection when the beads are exposed to either air or water, beads having a refractive index of 2.4 to 2.6 are mixed with beads having a refractive index of 1.8 to 2.0. In a further embodiment the exposed portions of the beads are covered with a layer of elastomer which is then cured at 150 DEG F. Also the beads may be initially coated with a silicate veneer.
