Abstract

1,081,159. Scanning non-metallic sheet material. W. H. W. SCHULLER. April 12, 1966 [April 22, 1965] , No. 16076/66. Heading B5K. The ends of fibrous mats B, B<SP>1</SP> are joined by means of adhesive applied only at distributed intervals A to the ends of the mats to be joined. The mats may be of glass fibres reinforced with continuous strands or glass fibre slivers G. The seam may be an overlap seam, as shown, or a butt seam. The adhesive may be based on thermosetting condensation products which have short setting periods and its viscosity may be adjusted by the addition of a filler, e.g. swelling starch, methyl cellulose or diatomaceous earth. Adhesives dissolved in a volatile medium and setting in the absence of heat may be used. The adhesive is applied in the form of dots A, D which may be rectangular, circular, angular, triangular or cruciform and which occupy up to 35% of the area of the joint. Alternatively, the adhesive is applied in narrow continuous or discontinuous lines. At the edges E, F of the overlap the dots D are slightly larger than the remaining dots A or, alternatively, the dots D may be provided in the form of rectangular applications or narrow lines. The dots may be applied by spraying, by brushing using a stencil, by dropping from a container provided above the joint to be produced or by stamping using a hollow stamping strip or stamping roller guided at both ends in vertical rails and containing adhesive which issues through individual nozzles. The period of discharge of the adhesive may be controlled by a time relay. To apply the adhesive, the mats B, B<SP>1</SP> are clamped in position by jaws and the top mat B is folded back to enable the adhesive dots to be applied. The upper mat B is then returned. If the adhesive is applied using compressed air, then it is not necessary to turn the mat B back prior to the application of adhesive since it will permeate the overlap. A pneumatically operated heated bar is lowered to press the joint. The bar is preferably made of individual spring-loaded segments. To form a butt joint, a strip is unwound from a roll, provided with dots of adhesive externally of, or above, the mat, and then moved under or on to the joint.
