Abstract

An ear-snapping unit for a maize-harvester comprises three forwardly and downwardly extending snapping rollers, two of which are parallel to one another and have spiral auger-flights for moving the maize-stalks upwardly between them, and the third roller is positioned above the other two and is skewed so that its lower end is vertically above the gap between the lower two but its upper end is vertically above one of the lower rollers with which it co-operates to snap ears from the stalks, this upper roller having a smooth working surface in the latter region. All three rollers are mounted in bearings at their lower ends and in a gearbox at their upper ends, the roller-portions adjacent to the gearbox being provided with longitudinal flutes for rejecting corn stalks from the vicinity of the gearbox. The smooth portion of the upper roller may be covered with rubber or plastics, and the lower part of the roller carries an auger-flight.
