Abstract
Silicon is produced from an electrolyte of silica dissolved in cryolite in an electrolytic cell the internal wall of which is composed of finely divided silica e.g. sand. The electrolyte, preferably kept at a temperature between 970 and 1400 DEG C. by passing A.C. therethrough between a pair of electrodes immersed therein, may separate into an upper phase containing 3-10% silica and a lower phase containing up to 80% silica, the silica being introduced into the electrolyte as silicon is electro-deposited. The cell may comprise a container of steel or silica brick with a body of finely divided pure sand lining the inside, initially rammed therein and filled with solid cryolite with or without silica which is melted to produce the electrolyte. The main electrodes are preferably of graphite. Prior art cells using molten cryolite are referred to as being lined with graphite, boron nitride or silicon carbide bonded with silicon nitride.
