A filter press comprises a stack of plates (1) between which a length of filter cloth 16 is wound in a zigzag fashion, the cloth passing over a drive roller (29) which moves the cloth when the press is opened (Fig. 2, not shown). Fig. 3 shows two adjacent plates, each comprising upper and lower frames 7, 9 between which is clamped a flexible diaphragm 11, frame 7 carrying a rigid grid 8 which supports the overlying filter cloth 16. Plates 1 each have a lower peripheral seal 13 and sections of ducts 14, 28. With the press closed, slurry from valve (27) is delivered by duct 14 to form a cake C, filtrate being withdrawn from duct 28. Subsequently, liquid under pressure is supplied to inlets 12 to displace the diaphragms 11 downwards, so as to squeeze the cake C. The valve (27) supplies washing liquid to duct 14, and the cake is squeezed again. Duct 28 has a three-way outlet valve for separate collection of filtrate and washing liquids containing much and little dissolved materials. Lower platen (5) is lowered by electric motor-driven toggle linkage (6) (Fig. 1, not shown), and cloth 16, carrying sections of cake C is wound on, floating and fixed knives (22), (23) removing the cake from the cloth. In addition, the cloth passes through a cleaning chamber (17), where it is acted on by knives (25') and soft rotating brushes (24) through which liquid is supplied. Cloth 16 is maintained taut by two movable rollers (19) and fixed roller (20). In a large press, supporting rollers (18), as well as roller (29), may be driven.
