Abstract
1,080,353. Cleaning ship's plating. H. NORRIS and W. N. DEARN. May 24, 1965 [April 3, 1964], No. 13790/64. Heading B7M. [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for removing scale from ship's decks comprises a chassis 10 on wheels 11, 13 with handles 16 for manual steering, a shaft 22 carrying abrading elements 30 and rotated by a motor 54 and means 21, 43, 44 for moving the abrading elements into and out of contact with the plating. The shaft 22 is mounted in bearings in a member 21 which is carried at one side of the chassis 10 and overhangs the other side to the full width of the chassis (Fig. 1, not shown). Three shafts 27 which are mounted around the overhanging portion of the shaft 22 serve as pivots for sets of the hammer-elements 30. The motor 54 drives the shaft 22 through belts 38 and 39 which interconnect through a double pulley 37 mounted on a cross-shaft 20. The rear end of the member 21 is pivoted on the cross-shaft 20 and can be turned about it by manipulating the handle 46 operating the linkage 44-43-21 to raise the abrading elements to the inoperative position. The spring 45 serves as a shock absorber and the wheels 11, 13 have resilient tyres.
