Abstract

In a grinding machine in which a workpiece of triangular or other polygonal form (e.g. a tungsten carbide cutting tip) is gripped between two gripping members rotatable on a common axis while a grinding wheel is advanced to grind the exposed profile of the workpiece, a work positioning device comprises a body portion 10 and a body portion 12, each being provided with a groove 13 formed by converging walls, the portion 12 being adjustable relative to the other portion in a central plane and in a direction normal to the direction of the grooves. The portion 12 is adjusted by a screw 20 passing through a bottom plate 18 and the two portions are clamped together by a pair of screws 16 which pass through slots 17 in the portion 10; guide plates 15 are secured one each side of the portion 10. The profile of the workpiece is ground by a diamond wheel which is controlled by a cam forming part of one of the gripping members. In use, the positioning device is engaged with the cam so that the latter is received in the groove of the portion 10; the workpiece is engaged by the groove in the portion 12. The work positioning device is pre-set with the adjusting screw so that the workpiece is centred relative to the cam, the walls of the grooves in the positioning device having the same taper as the sides of the cam. One of the gripping members is axially-movable towards the other and after the workpiece has been positioned and gripped, the work positioning device is removed and grinding commenced. The diamond wheel is rotated on an axis parallel with that of the gripping members and is mounted on a pivoted carrier which is biased by a spring and provided with an adjustable cam follower. Any desired polygonal form may be ground provided that a corresponding profile of cam is used and the grooves in the work positioning device are of suitable form.
