My invention relates broadly to a` tool-holder of the class which is mounted on the compound feed of a lathe, and is held in operative position thereon by the ordinary tool post. The device shown is designed to receive the plain round tool post, but may be designed to receive other practical forms, if desired.
The invention consists substantially in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts associated therewith or as will be more fully hereinafter set `forth as shown by the accompanying drawings and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a detail front elevation of the supporting base of the tool-holder.
Figure 2 is a side view of the supporting base shown in Fig. l. Part of the base is broken away.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the tool bushing bearing block, detached from the supporting base shown in Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the bearing block shown in Fig. 3.
Figure 5 is a side view of one of the clamps used in combination with the supporting base and bearing block.
Figure 6 is an end view of Fig. 5.
Figure 7 is an end view of a boring tool holder bushing showing its construction.
Figure 8 is plan detail view of the bearing block supporting plate.
Figure 9 is a detail side view of the plate shown in Fig. 8.

'I'he tool bushing is not shown in the section, being eliminated from the section for the sake of clearness.
Referring to the drawings I0 represents a suitable supporting base or body having a perpendicular portion II and a horizontally extending portion I2 integrally formed therewith, In the horizontally extending portion I2 there is provided an opening I3 adapted to receive a plain round tool-holder or post by means of which the supporting base may be secured in place on, the compound feed of a lathe or other suitable machine for use. The tool post and compound feed are not shownbut understood in the art. In the perpendicular portion I I there is provided a vertical threaded bore I4 having at its upper end a notch I5. On the face of the perpendicular portion there is provided an outstanding guideway I6. On either side of the guideway there is provided an elongated through slot as at I1 and I8, see Fig. 1.
The bearing block I9 consists of a semicylindrical or arcuate bearing portion 28 and two symmetrically arranged through openings 2I and 22 for the reception of the clamp members 23 and 24, see clamps in position in the bearing block in Fig. 10.' In the bearing block there is provided a recess 25 to snugly receive the outstanding guideway I6 integrally formed on the perpendicular portion of the supporting base ID. On the upper portion of the bearing block there is provided a fixed supporting plate 26. The screw 2'I which cooperates with the threaded bore I4 in the perpendicular portion is rotatably supported in the bearing 28 in the fixed plate. The bores 29 and 30 shown in the plate in Figs. 8 and 9 are provided for the reception of the screws 3| and 32 that hold the plate in assembled relation with the bearing block. The threaded member 21 is provided with a Xed hand-wheel 33.
In the through opening 2I and 22 in the bearing block there are mounted the clamping members 23 and 24. The clamps are each provided with an integral extending portion 34 having a threaded section 35 for the reception of nut 36, see Figs. 5 and 12. The through openings 2I and 22 are in alignment with the elongated slots I'I and I8, so that when the clamps are mounted in the bearing block the portion 34 will pass through the slot in the perpendicular portion, as shown in the sectional detail, see Fig. 12. It will be noted in Fig. 12 that when the opening 31 in the clamp is in alignment with the bearing block bearing 20, the end portion 39 of the clamp proper is in spaced relation with the perpendicular portion of the supporting means, so that when the nut is tightened on the clamp, a pressure will be exerted on a tool holding bushing that may be placed therein, see Fig. 10 showing a tool holding bushing 40 in position in the device.
It will be noted, see Fig. 10, that the clamp 23 is provided with a notch 4I for the reception of 55 the long hollow set screw 42. This long hollow set screw 42 extends beyond the periphery 43 of the tool holding bushing 40, see Figs. '7 and 11 for the purpose of properly positioning the short hollow set screw 45 in alignment with aperture 46 in the clamp, so that the set screw may be easily reached with a suitable tightening and releasing means.
It will be further noted that the long hollow set screw further functions to position the transverse axis of the bushing wherein is formed a through opening 41 of special configuration. The through opening in the bushing has a V shaped portion, 48 Y and a rounded top 49. This construction is provided to hold a round shank of a boring or other suitable tool, and provides a .means whereby rounded Shanks of various sizes may be held fast in the bushing when the Set screws. are set there against.
The apex 50 of the V is on the exact transverse center line of the bushing, and the center line of the set screws are likewise in alignment with the transverse center line of the bushing, so that the set screws in bushing are horizontally aligned, and the V shaped opening positioned transversely simultaneously in the clamps when the long set screw is placed in the notch 4I in the clamp 23 adapted to receive the same.
The operation of the device is as follows:
'Ihe device is mounted on the selected machine and secured in place. The nuts on the clamp members are released. The selected cutting tool is mounted in vthe tool-holding bushing and locked therein by means of the long and short set screws. The cutting tool is brought into proper cutting relation with the part to be machined by adjusting screw in the device. The clamps are then locked by tightening the nut on the clamp, which also locks the adjusting screw against accidental movement. After the clamps are set, the boring tool or other selected tool may be removed for grinding or sharpening, by simply releasing the set screws, leaving the tool setting otherwise in place.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specic forms without departure from the spirit or ea-ential attributes thereof;
and I therefore desire that the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claim rather than the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
I claim:
In a tool-holder, the combination of a supporting base having on a face thereof and intermediate its length an outstanding integrally formed vertical guideway of less height than the aforesaid face, and having a notch at the upper terminus of the guideway, said notch adapted to Vpermit a threaded adjusting screw and a supporting plate additional adjusting range downwardon the supporting base, and also having a through threaded bore rearwardly of the guideway, and further having aligned elongated openings on either side of the aforementioned guideway, an adjusting screw, a supporting plate, a bearing block having a receiving recess for the guideway, and also having a base of part cylindrical form, and spaced through openings adapted to receive clamps, companion clamps, one of the said clamps having a semicylindrical lateral notch, while the other of the said clamps is provided with a smooth bore in alignment with the notch in the companion clamp, the supporting plate fixed rigidly to the bearing block and having the adjusting screw rotatably mounted in a bearing therein and confined between a shoulder on the adjusting screw and a hand Wheel fast on the upper portion of the adjusting screw, the adjusting screw being threaded into the threaded bore rearwardly of the guideway, a tool-holding bushing, a plurality of set screws in the bushing, one of the plurality of set screws extending beyond the periphery of the bushing and adapted to engage in the lateral notch formed in the clamp, the other of said plurality of set screws extending to the periphery of the bushing and positioned in alignment with the smooth bore in the other clamp by the long set screw, through which bore the short set screw may be manipulated, the tool-holding'bushing being clamped in the bearing block by means of a nut on each clamp.
