Abstract

Graft polymers are made by forming a mixture comprising a polar liquid medium, a free radical-polymerizable monomer which is insoluble or substantially insoluble in the medium, an aliphatic hydrocarbon free from peroxidic groups and dispersed in the medium, a surfactant and an oil-soluble free-radical catalyst, and heating the mixture to polymerize the monomer on to the polymer. Polymers specified are those of ethylene, propylene, butene-1, 4-methylpentene-1, 3-methylpentene-1, octene-1 and decene-1. Monomers specified are styrene and its derivatives, acrylic compounds, vinyl ketones, vinyl ethers, vinyl halides, vinyl esters, vinyl heterocyclic compounds and diolefines. The examples describe the polymerization in aqueous media in the presence of benzoyl peroxide of: (1, 2 and 7) 4-vinyl pyridine and polypropylene with subsequent dyeing or (4) quaternization of the product, (3) 4-vinylpyridine and poly-4-methylpentene-1, (5-6) vinyl acetate and polypropylene, with subsequent hydrolysis of the polymerized vinyl acetate polymer, (8) styrene and polypropylene, (9, 10 and 12) styrene, 4-vinyl or 2-vinyl pyridine and polypropylene and (11) styrene, 2-vinylpyridine and poly-4-methylpentene-1.
