Abstract

Compositions suitable for providing coatings resistant to the solvent action of liquid hydro-carbons comprise an aqueous emulsion containing from 40 to 70% by weight of a resinous or elastomeric polymer or copolymer (as specified below), the emulsion being prepared by emulsifying the polymer or copolymer with water in the presence of 0.01 to 10% by weight of an acid and 0.1 to 5% by weight of an organic nitrogen base, said percentages being based on the weight of the emulsion. The polymer or copolymer used is insoluble in liquid hydrocarbons and is selected from butadiene-styrene, butadiene-acrylonitrile and styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, polymethacrylates, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers, polyvinylidene chloride and mixtures thereof. The polymeric component may be plasticized, e.g. with tricresyl phosphate, mono- or di-n-butyl phthalate, or mono- or di-octyl phthalate, in which case said plasticizer is included in the specified content of polymer in the emulsion. Furthermore part of the specified polymer may be replaced by a resin which is soluble in liquid hydrocarbons and which may be selected from petroleum or coumarone-indene resins,colophony resins, modified natural resins, and bitumens, tars and road oils. These soluble resins may be admixed with oils such as petroleum oils. Suitable acids for preparing the emulsion include hydrochloric acid, formic acid and acetic acid, and as the nitrogen base there may be used aliphatic amines, aliphatic polyamines, amido-amines, amino acids, alkylene oxide condensation products of polyamines or amido-amines, quaternary ammonium bases, and salts thereof; the preferred base is 3-octadecylaminopropylamine. Optional ingredients include protective colloid stabilizers, e.g. polyvinyl alcohols, long chain polyglycols and their fatty acid esters, and cellulose or starch ethers; and fillers and pigments, e.g. titanium white, chrome yellow, cadmium red, iron oxide, chrome green, phthalocyanine blue and green, Hanso yellow and toluidine red. Examples illustrate emulsions containing (1) styrene-butadiene (20/80) copolymer, (ii) acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer, (iii) polyvinyl acetate, (iv) polyvinyl acetate and petroleum resin, (v) polyvinyl acetate and bitumen.
