Abstract

1,080,203. Road-traffic signals. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 17, 1966 [May 21, 1965], No. 21540/65. Heading G4Q. [Also in Division H2] In a switching circuit, e.g. for road traffic signalling systems, having two static switching devices TH1, TH2 connected to control the non-concurrent energization of two loads GLNS and GLEW, the devices TH1, TH2 are connected in series with a fuse F and a unilateral conducting device D1 so that should both devices TH1, TH2 be conducting at the same time due to a fault condition, current flowing in the series circuit will blow the fuse. Normally the device TH1 is rendered conducting by a driver unit DU1 to energize the load GLNS and the device TH2 is rendered conducting by a driver unit DU2 to energize the load GLEW. The devices TH1, TH2 may be thyristors, in which case the supply is the unsmoothed output of a full-wave rectifier fed from A.C. mains. A resistor R1 causes a standing current to flow so that no excessive current surges result when a thyristor is switched on, and a resistor R2 limits the current when both thyristors are conducting at the same time due to a faulty thyristor or due to faulty control of the thyristors.
